The first meeting of the European Jewish Congress (EJC) Executive Committee after the June election of the Congress new president, Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor, was held in Geneva on July 30. The meeting discussed a number of essential issues related to the future activities of the organization. The Executive Committee resolved unanimously to appoint Evgeny Chervonenko – a renowned Ukrainian politician and public figure, the governor of Zaporozhye region – the EJC special envoy for Central and Eastern Europe.
Evgeny Chervonenko has held top state offices in Ukraine over a number of years. His appointment to a high level position within the EJC is the recognition of his influence, outstanding achievements and support granted by him to the Jewish movement in Ukraine. The EJC executives highly praised Chervonenko’s managerial skills as well as his active involvement in preparation and holding of the Second International Holocaust Forum “Let My People Live!” which took place in Kyiv in September 2006 in commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the Babi Yar tragedy.

The officials of the EJC are convinced that Chervonenko’s vast experience in political and social sphere will allow achieving success in preserving historical memory of the Jewish people, promoting tolerance and combating xenophobia on a pan-European level.
