Mike Pence, Vice President of the United States, talked about the importance of honouring the promise of remembrance. “One cannot walk the streets of Auschwitz without being overcome with emotion and grief. One cannot see the pile of bodies, the gas chambers and crematoriums without asking ‘how could they’”.

Reuven Rivlin, President of the State of Israel opened the Fifth World Holocaust Forum and thanked all those in attendance for the solidarity shown towards the Jewish people: “We should never see in democracy something that can be taken for granted. We must stand side by side for the sake of humankind”.
