Viatcheslav Kantor became new President of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC), Interfax was informed by the sources in the RJC Presidium which meeting is taking place Thursday evening in Moscow.
According to the agency’s interlocutor, at the very beginning of the meeting the previous President of the Congress Vladimir Slutsker announced his abdication having delegated his authority to V.Kantor.

Along with this, V.Slutsker was proposed to become Chairman of the RJC Board.

V.Kantor was recommended as presidential nominee at the extraordinary meeting of the Bureau of the Congress’ Presidium on October 6, RJC reported to Interfax. Current problems connected with the Congress’ activities as well as the approval of new Presidium members, the structure of the Congress and the creation of its Rabbinic Council were discussed at the meeting.

The RJC Presidium Bureau recommended replacing the current President of the organization V.Slutsker at the beginning of October. As it was said in the news of the Presidium Bureau dated October 7, at the meeting “the Bureau recommended the candidacy of Viatcheslav Kantor in the capacity of an acting new President of the RJC”.

It was said in the news that V.Kantor was the largest shareholder of the JSC Acron (Novgorod region), the leading producer of mineral fertilizers. “Viatcheslav Kantor is a well known businessman and patron whose activities go far beyond the borders of our country. That is why I am sure that under his leadership the activities of the RJC will rise to a higher level”, – the words of a Bureau member, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the JSC Alfa-Bank Mikhail Friedman were quoted in the press-release.
